The "LBS-Zukunftskompass: Kommunen gestalten - Generationsgerechtes Wohnen und Leben" (2.3 MB) developed by the IZT became more than just an appealing guide for mayors. The client LBS (Bausparkasse der Sparkassen) financed a kick-off workshop in the municipality of Nuthetal on 16 March 2013, as this municipality wanted to be the first to specifically implement the Future Compass. The workshop in Nuthetal, Brandenburg, was moderated by Christine Henseling (IZT). The LBS Future Compass, published in 2012, incorporated the views and experiences of more than 70 mayors, experts and citizens who have long been committed to intergenerationally fair communities. The detailed IZT Workshop Report No. 118 on which the Future Compass is based can be downloaded free of charge from the IZT.

Intergenerational equity is often used synonymously with the term sustainability, but also emphasises the idea of intergenerational cooperation and future-oriented thinking and action. Intergenerationally equitable living can be a stabilising factor for communities, as intergenerationally equitable coexistence and a future-oriented vision are attractive to residents of all ages. However, anchoring intergenerationally just housing and living locally requires not only visionary strategies, but also concrete approaches to action that make intergenerational justice visible and tangible for citizens.

The aim of the municipality of Nuthetal was to develop a mission statement "Intergenerational Nuthetal" by the end of 2013. In doing so, the municipality drew on the model developed by IZT and LBS (Bausparkasse der Sparkassen).  Future compass "Shaping communities - intergenerational housing and living" to.
As part of this mission statement, guidelines and objectives were developed for the following four fields of action:

  • Dialogue between the generations
  • Conservation of resources
  • Maintaining the quality of life and
  • intergenerational coexistence.

The IZT supported this process by organising a kick-off workshop entitled "Generation-friendly Nuthetal". The aim of the workshop was to work with stakeholders from politics and administration, business, associations and the education and social sectors to develop the initial cornerstones for a mission statement and generate ideas for specific measures and projects to implement it.
