The project agency "Sustainable Berlin" was set up by the IZT in 1999 to promote sustainable development in Berlin. Building on the diverse initiatives in the city, projects, pilot schemes and campaigns were developed, qualified and implemented in the fields of action "Ecological Economy", "Urban Development/Building/Housing/Environmentally Friendly Mobility", "Living Environments/Culture/Education/Youth" and "One World/Development Cooperation", which are particularly important for the city as a whole. The positive development of the project agency and the response from the applicants and project partners led to the extension of the project agency's work until the end of 2004 and a second extension until the end of 2006. The project was steered and supported by a steering committee made up of representatives of important social institutions and organisations.

The project agency aimed to integrate the endogenous potential of many of Berlin's social actors into the agenda process and achieve the greatest possible participation effects within the framework of specific projects. The overall project thus made a contribution to promoting future viability and innovation as well as improving the quality of life and location in Berlin.
The Project Agency for a Sustainable Berlin was able to fund a total of 99 projects. Many of them were continued after the initial funding. Through these concrete and illustrative projects, the understanding and impact of the guiding principle of sustainable development as well as the practical activities within the framework of Local Agenda 21 in Berlin were noticeably supported.
