The development of future-proof mobile multimedia services is not only of crucial economic importance for the manufacturing and provider industries. Such services can act as a driver of innovation in a large number of sectors and develop a correspondingly high overall economic potential. But which of the many possible services are promising? How can the development of mobile telephony be promoted - in particular through economically viable applications that are geared towards the needs of users? These questions were at the centre of the project "Development and future significance of mobile multimedia services".

The methodological approach of the project was based on

  • an online survey in which around 700 small and medium-sized content providers and multimedia agencies took part;
  • utilisation scenarios, which were divided into the fields of financial services, shopping, entertainment, information services, health and wellness, learning, work, security services and telematics, and
  • a technology roadmap.

For the foreseeable future, the key to widespread use and significant sales of mobile multimedia services will remain the established services of voice communication and SMS. From here, however, a migration path leads to mobile multimedia services. Certain "small" applications, which do not necessarily have to generate high revenues but are perceived by many users as indispensable in everyday life, have a different kind of key function. In the case of mobile multimedia services, these can be information functions in particular, but especially certain payment services. Overall, it will be important to create as diverse a range of offers as possible that do not simply bring conventional e-commerce applications to mobile phones, but instead utilise the specific new possibilities of mobile communication.
