Development of a module with measures to increase the acceptance of organic waste collection by the municipal waste collection...
The aim of the study was to increase the acceptance of biowaste collection in Berlin households. To this end, acceptance factors, obstacles and potentials of biowaste collection were identified and analysed and measures to increase acceptance were developed.
Together with the various organisational units of the waste management company, a promising set of measures was compiled from the catalogue of measures. In order to be able to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the measures in more detail and to test their suitability for a Berlin-wide expansion, a concept for trialling the measures was developed and underpinned with estimates of costs and effort.
Biowaste collection in urban centres is confronted with particular problems due to the specific settlement structures and social structures; the quantity and quality of the collected material as well as the motivation for collection are rather low. The aim of this study was to identify measures to increase the acceptance of biowaste collection in Berlin, taking into account experiences in other national and international conurbations.
In the medium term, increasing acceptance serves to lay the foundations for the most extensive and high-quality utilisation of the collected biowaste for energy generation.
As part of the project, influencing factors, obstacles and potentials of biowaste collection were analysed at different levels (including organisation of collection, technological solutions, acceptance structures) and solution variants were developed to increase acceptance.
This was based on a comparative analysis of organic waste collection practices in Berlin and other major German and European cities.
An acceptance analysis of Berlin households (e.g. via focus groups with Berlin citizens) should provide in-depth insights into acceptance structures and possible measures among "collectors" and "non-collectors".
The subsequent strategy development was fed back at an early stage and in a participatory manner with relevant stakeholders in biowaste collection as part of a stakeholder workshop.
