How can an inner-city lorry loading centre with all its exhaust and noise pollution be transformed into a "showcase for technical, ecological and social innovation"? The Berlin-based IZT has addressed this question and developed a concept for a "Moabit freight transport sub-centre and adventure park" together with the Mitte district office of Berlin. The vision: walkers and families with children can relax in the green Moabit adventure park and at the same time observe how state-of-the-art technology is used to load containers from lorries onto trains and barges in a low-noise and environmentally friendly manner.

The future study "Moabit freight sub-centre" was intended to open up new perspectives for environmentally and socially compatible freight transport in the city. The core of the project was the development and implementation of a concept for a freight sub-centre close to the city centre, which represents an interface between long-distance rail transport and local transport for fine distribution by road. Goods are transferred from rail to low-noise and low-emission city lorries using innovative technologies. At the same time, a wide range of high-quality logistics services are offered, such as goods tracking, scheduling, route planning and optimisation. An integral part of the concept was a district park in the immediate vicinity of the freight sub-centre, which had long been requested by the Tiergarten district and from which, among other things, all traffic flows can be directly observed. As a result, modern technologies can be experienced and freight transport is transformed from a disruptive factor into an accepted part of the urban environment.
In the second phase, the project concept was further developed and concretised by incorporating practical requirements and visualised using suitable plans and sketches. In addition, the chances of realising the project were discussed in numerous meetings at urban planning and political level and suitable implementation strategies were developed. In the third phase of the study, the results to date were summarised in a presentation folder.
