South Africa is one of the largest per capita emitters of greenhouse gases in the world. Nevertheless, for years South Africa has hardly been able to supply its citizens and companies with sufficient electricity, as many of the country's companies do not produce energy efficiently. Could a regional agency for energy efficiency and climate protection provide a remedy? In a feasibility study, the IZT and partners analysed the chances of setting up such an agency for the greater Johannesburg area (Gauteng Energy Efficiency and Climate Agency, GEECA). This region - Gauteng - was the economic powerhouse of South Africa.

This project analysed the feasibility of establishing a regional energy efficiency and climate protection agency (Gauteng Energy Efficiency and Climate Agency, GEECA). The aim was to significantly improve the energy efficiency performance of companies in the industry and trade and services sectors in Gauteng, the economic powerhouse of South Africa. The project analysed the prerequisites and conditions (legal framework, political strategies and activities, examples of links) for the agency and clarified the political/administrative and private sector interests. A 'Business Creation' workshop was held to reach an agreement with key stakeholders on objectives, scope and range of tasks, opportunities for participation and cooperation.
