Digital cameras, notebooks, MP3 players, games consoles, printers, landline telephones, mobile phones and plasma televisions - there are many information and communication technology (ICT) devices in modern households. In Germany alone, ten power stations were needed to cover the electricity requirements of these devices.

This project investigated how consumers can significantly reduce energy consumption by making conscious purchasing decisions in favour of energy-saving devices and using them intelligently. The Federal Environment Agency made the brochure "Computer, Internet und Co", which was compiled by the IZT, available for free download. More than 220,000 users downloaded the brochure.

Information and communication technology (ICT) forms the technical basis for the information and knowledge society. ICT contributes to saving resources and reducing climate-relevant emissions in many economic and social areas. At the same time, the production, use and disposal of ICT are also associated with energy and material consumption and the corresponding environmental impact. It is in this context that this project, which was tendered by the Federal Environment Agency and pursued the following objectives, should be seen:

  • Compilation of environmental relief measures in private households through the purchase of energy-efficient devices and the sustainable use of ICT, primarily for end devices in the office,
  • Estimation of material stocks and material requirements for data centres in Germany, including the derivation of recommendations for action to increase material efficiency,
  • Technical and organisational preparation of the BMU/UBA/BITKOM annual conference at CeBIT 2009.

The IZT's task in the project was to compile information and provide practical tips to support consumers in the purchase and use of information and communication technology. The project was rounded off with a brochure that conveyed and summarised tried-and-tested recommendations for the resource-efficient use of ICT.
