The project networks science, business, civil society and local authorities in order to shape the Elbe Valley region into a campus for transdisciplinary knowledge and experience transfer and to initiate long-term cooperation between regional stakeholders and universities and research institutions outside the region. The transfer of knowledge and experience is not only understood in one direction (from the university to the region), but in both directions (new findings from the universities to the region and application and experience knowledge from practice directly to the universities). For example, the project is investigating how cooperation between scientific institutions and regional stakeholders in the Elbe Valley can achieve long-term effects on innovation processes and the self-organised transformation of the region. At the same time, research needs and innovation potentials are jointly identified in order to provide the corresponding impetus for practice- and public welfare-orientated innovations for a sustainable Elbe Valley.

The WIR! Elbe Valley: Region as Campus is part of the implementation strategy of the "Elbe Valley" alliance and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the "WIR! - Wandel durch Innovation in der Region" programme under the funding code 03WIR7204. The IZT is a member of the "Elbe Valley" alliance and is involved in the further development of the implementation strategy.
