Risks and opportunities of the use of RFID systems
The study documented and forecast the use of so-called radio chips, radio frequency identification systems (RFID), and also highlighted selected fields of application and effects in the area of IT security.
In order to comprehensively illustrate the potentials and risks of RFID systems, a technology analysis and market review of current RFID systems was first carried out. With a view to the technological possibilities feasible in the near future, possible stages of technology and market development in the RFID sector were outlined in the form of a roadmap. The time horizon up to 2010 was analysed in more detail.
The threat situation, possible security measures and their expected effectiveness were then analysed in more detail. In addition to a refined structuring of the risks to IT security, existing security measures or those under discussion were recorded and systematised.
Based on a broad overview of the use of RFID systems in relevant sectors and areas of application, the analysis then focussed on selected application examples that illustrate particularly significant or cross-sectional areas of application. The results of the opportunity/risk analysis were then transferred and summarised in action-oriented scenarios.
