The IZT gained an overview of the stationary, non-traction energy consumption of European railway infrastructure operators, then collected the implemented, ongoing and planned measures to reduce energy consumption, systematised them and identified examples of good practice. It also laid the foundations for the start of a coordinated approach to improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption at UIC (International Union of Railways) level.

The stationary energy consumption in the European railway systems at the start of the project was around 15 % and included technical and administrative buildings (office buildings, maintenance and repair facilities), railway stations, marshalling yards, point heating, lighting, signals, traffic control systems and telecommunications.
