SUSTAIN - Best Practices, Benchmarking and Recommendations for Sustainable Stations
Development of guidelines and recommendations for action to increase the sustainability performance of railway stations.
The IZT assessed the sustainability performance of railway stations for the International Union of Railways (UIC). The list of "best practices" is headed by the main railway station in Utrecht in the Netherlands. It not only scores points for ecological factors such as the energy concept with solar cells or the 22,500 bicycle parking spaces. This railway station has also been upgraded with numerous services that ensure more public traffic and jobs. For example, the new town hall was built directly on the station site. The IZT project developed guidelines and recommendations for action so that railway operators can significantly improve the sustainability performance of their stations.
