Sustainable Value in the Airline Industry
The monetary evaluation of companies' environmental performance has so far been the focus of the "Sustainable Value Reasearch" research group and the IZT. In this project, however, the approach was applied to products and services for the first time. Thanks to the support of aircraft manufacturer EADS, an initial comparison of the environmental performance of various passenger transport systems was possible.
In the "Sustainable Value in the Airline Industry" project, the IZT, together with "Sustainable Value Research", applied the innovative sustainable value approach for the first time across several life cycle steps of services and products. The aim was to enable a value-based comparison of the environmental performance of different passenger transport systems.
The focus was on air and rail transport. For this purpose, the sustainable value approach was first adapted to enable an application that takes into account the characteristics and requirements of passenger transport systems. In a next step, this model was transferred to a computer-based application in order to subsequently simulate predefined scenarios of a value-based environmental performance comparison of selected passenger transport systems.
By applying the sustainable value approach, the sustainability initiatives and performance of different companies, systems and sectors can be compared with each other and presented in monetary terms. This approach therefore provides an excellent basis for business and economic as well as political and prospective decisions for all areas of the company or industry or in a system comparison.
