Ukrainian Railways: Energy efficiency, energy policy and organisation
The project objective was to develop a catalogue of measures with which Ukraine's largest railway company can significantly reduce its energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
With a rail network of over 21,000 kilometres, 120,000 railcars, 3,800 locomotives and around 1,600 railway stations, the Ukrainian railway company "PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia" (UZ) is the largest transport company in Ukraine. UZ consumes considerable amounts of oil, gas and coal for its vehicle fleet and infrastructure. In contrast to the particularly efficient European railway companies, UZ therefore has to spend not just five per cent but 20 per cent of its total operating expenditure on energy. Following an in-depth analysis, the IZT developed a catalogue of measures with which the Ukrainian railway can significantly reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.
