Abstract

In 2008, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the "Energy-efficient city" competition, which honoured the cities of Delitzsch, Essen, Magdeburg, Stuttgart and Wolfhagen in 2011. They are realising their concepts together with partners from science and practice. This series of publications documents the approaches and results.
The fifth volume in the series is dedicated to the influence of targeted communication and participation in the "energy-efficient city" field of action. The focus is on the questions of how barriers and reservations can be reduced among the various stakeholders and how the commitment and participation of citizens can be promoted. The spectrum of fields of action analysed ranges from energy refurbishment to mobility, from the reorientation of public participation processes to citizen energy cooperatives. It becomes clear that successful innovation, communication and participation go far beyond questions of energy efficiency and are often the yardstick for project success.
