Abstract

The energy transition is not taking place in a social vacuum: It can only take place in the context of other far-reaching processes of social change. Digitalisation, mobility, urbanisation - these and other major social developments are referred to as "megatrends". They are seen as signposts and social dimensions that need to be taken into account when it comes to shaping the future. But what actually makes a development a megatrend? And what influence do these megatrends have on the energy transition?

The contributors to this volume discuss the conditions of megatrends as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise for the energy transition in the face of these major developments.
