Abstract

In the discussion about a sustainable economy, there are calls to focus more on services instead of sales orientation. This is linked to the expectation that product- or use-related services will open up new business areas for companies and at the same time offer potential for environmental relief. The Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment (IZT) Berlin, with the support of the VW Foundation, has investigated various of these services with regard to their environmental relief potential and conducted numerous case studies. Some theses, which have often been advocated very sweepingly in the literature up to now, had to give way to a clearly differentiated consideration.
