Abstract

In the past decade, various activities have been undertaken in Egypt with regard to futures research and corresponding institutions and capacities have been created. Although these do not always meet high scientific standards, the results of such discourses and studies offer important and well-founded elements for future-oriented social discussions and political decisions. Not least because of the revolt of January 2011 and the complex and conflict-ridden social disputes in Egypt since then, both the objective need and the demand for well-founded and systematic future thinking and future studies are likely to increase further. Therefore, this report provides an overview of the initial conditions, experiences and forms of futures research in Egypt. The main challenges and issues are described. The focus is on a brief description of the main institutions that conduct futures research, their projects and, in addition, two concrete practical examples that attempt to implement futures capability in different ways. Finally, (self-)critical assessments and perspectives from the Egyptian futurology scene are presented.
