Improving raw material productivity and resource conservation
Abstract
This abridged version of the final report was produced as part of the research project "Improving Resource Productivity and Resource Conservation" funded by the Federal Environment Agency. The project was led by the Wuppertal Institute together with the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment in Berlin (IZT) and the UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP). It reflects the results of the Future Dialogue from 2007 to 2008 and provides an insight into current potentials, opportunities and barriers for improving raw material and resource productivity in the focus areas "Construction and Housing" "Steel" and "Copper". Background research, expert interviews and workshops were part of the open dialogue process with stakeholders from business, politics and science. In addition, selected options for measures are presented with examples of efficient approaches to action. The aim of the future dialogue was to bundle concrete and practice-relevant contributions to improving raw material productivity and resource conservation and to develop options for measures to increase resource productivity. These must now be linked to existing political initiatives such as the European Resource Strategy and the "Ecological Industrial Policy" of the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU).
