Abstract

The learning unit "Solar cooling - basics" presents and explains the basic topics of solar cooling. The learning unit begins by categorising the topics of cooling and air conditioning and the importance of energy and environmental issues. This is followed by a presentation of the current state of the art in electricity-powered technology and its use. This is followed by an explanation of how solar cooling systems utilise solar energy to produce cooling. The physical processes such as absorption, adsorption or evaporation, which are the basis for cold production, are then presented. This is followed by an overview of the three most important technical systems: closed absorption and adsorption systems and systems for sorption-based air conditioning. Finally, the limitations and advantages, but also the obstacles of solar cooling are discussed.
