Abstract

In the development of megacities, the importance of bottom-up approaches initiated by civil society is often underestimated, as is the importance of the local level as an implementation level. Based on seven case studies from the Future Megacities programme on climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction, this volume shows how local citizens can be motivated to participate and take active action. The case studies convey experiences from pilot projects and action research, but also the stories behind the activities and cooperation processes and the lessons learned. The volume formulates overarching conclusions and recommendations for the implementation of urban development processes and for further participation research.
