Abstract

To support and finance projects and initiatives within the framework of Berlin's Local Agenda 21, the model organisation "Project Agency for a Sustainable Berlin" was established in 1999. This funding organisation, initiated by the Institute for Future Studies and Technology Assessment and financed by foundation funds, had supported forty projects by 2002. After three years, the authors take stock of this model. In addition to a brief overview of the sustainability concept and the LA-21 process in Berlin, they outline the tasks and working methods of the agency and present each of the funded projects with a one- to two-page brief description and contact addresses. The book concludes with an initial - qualitative - assessment of the agency's mobilisation and networking effects as well as reflections on future sustainability policy in Berlin. It is primarily aimed at practitioners and offers them a wide range of ideas and suggestions with the project descriptions.
