Abstract

"Raum für Zukunft" was first published in 1997 on the occasion of Karl Ganser's 60th birthday. Architects, urban planners, spatial planners and geographers have used the book extensively: as an overview of the history and conception of urban planning and as a practical insight into the urban regeneration of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The new edition has been greatly expanded, both in the conceptual section and in the case studies. New additions include contributions on the necessity of regionalisation at different scales (Zöpel), the stages of German settlement development (Muschwitz & Monheim), the difficulties of German planning in dealing with shrinking processes (Ganser), the continuation of land-use planning despite shrinking processes (Klemme), the urban development and transport changes in inner cities (Monheim & Monheim), the development of municipal planning in the context of the urbanisation of the city centre (Monheim & Monheim), the urban development and transport transformation of city centres (Monheim & Monheim), the development of municipal transport planning (Monheim), post-fossil mobility policy (Monheim) and the problems of major transport policy projects (Monheim), the conception of the Regionalen in North Rhine-Westphalia (Beierlorzer) and the Regionale 2006 in the Bergisches Städtedreieck (Beierlorzer).
