Abstract

Since the UN summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, attention in politics and the public has increased for the topic of "sustainability". Programmes and measures to protect and preserve the environment and social living conditions have been implemented in almost all countries of the world. Despite remarkable progress, however, the effects to date have been completely inadequate. It is therefore all the more interesting to look at a successful actor in the field of environmental and sustainability policy: Cuba. There are hardly any reports on the experiences of this Caribbean country in the German-speaking world. The authors make a contribution to this with their study and analyse the corresponding policies, strategies and measures that have led to a successful sustainability policy in Cuba despite manifold problems.
