Abstract

How do engineers and computer scientists perceive the connection between sustainability and their own development activities? On the basis of an empirical study and theoretical considerations on the topic of sustainability in the ICT sector, possibilities for sustainability-orientation in technology design are discussed. Oana Mitrea studied sociology at the University of Bucharest, specialising in communication sociology. She completed her doctorate at the University of Bucharest (2002) and as part of the graduate college "Technisation and Society" at the Technical University of Darmstadt (2005). She was a fellow at the IAS-STS (2004-2005) and has been a research associate at the IFZ in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) research area since December 2005, including as head of the project presented here. Matthias Werner studied political science, social and economic history and economics at the Universities of Bonn and Hamburg. From 2002-2005 he was a doctoral student at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Research Centre. Since December 2005, he has been a research assistant at the IFZ in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) research area.
